A robot vacuum can keep floors clean enough to decrease the frequency you'll need to manually vacuum. Look for one that offers good navigation, can sweep corners and stairs, and has a large dust bin that needs emptying only once in a while.
There are models that can mop and charge themselves, which is a feature essential for families with pets or children. A lot of the top performers in our tests have good obstacle avoidance.
1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO
The i3+ EVO is identical to its sibling the i3 EVO. They differ only in the fact that the i3+ comes with self-emptying capabilities. This makes the i3+ a good option for those who want a hands-off, fully automated cleaning experience but don't mind manually emptying their robot's dustbin as it gets full.
Both robots do well picking up surface debris on carpets and hard floors, and they're very adept in moving around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates a smart maps of your home that help the i3+ navigate and clean up efficiently. The i3+ does not feature obstacle avoidance features like the i7+ or any other top-rated robots we test. It can be stuck on power cords or socks and have difficulty navigating between different surfaces, like hardwood and rug.
iRobot recommends that you tidy the area in which the i3+ EVO vacuums before using it. This includes putting away any toys or other items it may encounter. You should also keep the dustbin and filters clear to avoid becoming clogged. When the i3+ EVO's internal bin is empty or the battery is low it returns to the docking station, and it automatically takes the dirt out of the docking station’s external dustbin. Then it continues cleaning where it left off. The i3+ EVO's battery can last for approximately an hour and a half of continuous use. It takes about three hours to fully recharge.
2. IRobot Roomba i7+
The iRobot i7+ is an excellent model from iRobot's flagship line and is packed with the latest technology. It's self-charging and self-navigating. But the most significant feature is its self-emptying bin. This eliminates the need for regular maintenance.
The Roomba i7+ can keep up to 10 floor plans and their names using Imprint Smart Mapping, an application that allows it to identify rooms to clean them more efficiently. It also integrates with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning tasks, and it can control your robot via the app or voice.
In our testing the i7+ performed more agile and faster than our second-placed model which was the eufy RoboVac G30, and it picked up large pieces of pet hair from all surfaces types, including carpeting. Its main advantage over the eufy, is its self-emptying dustbin that removes a major source of maintenance and reduces the cost of maintenance.
We were also awestruck by the i7+'s compatibility Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services which we used to instruct the robot to begin, stop or pause its cleaning routines and move around the room and vacuum the area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ to these services. Once connected, to speak commands to the i7+ like "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options for managing i7+ settings and evaluating performance.
3. Dyson Cyclone V10
This tiny Dyson model is an athletic car in a sea of vacuums powered by cordless that resemble minivans and buses. It's got the power and features to replace a stand-up vacuum for most households and can fit in well next to the coffee table or a bookshelf where you can move it around like the magic tool.
The V10 is powered with seven cells of energy-dense Lithium-ion batteries that produces energy that lasts for 60 minutes. Its advanced whole-machine filtration system removes allergens, and then releases cleaner air back into your home. The cleaning head is specially designed to drive stiff nylon bristles deep into carpet to collect large particles and fine dust. It has three suction modes to match the task at hand. It is able to quickly switch between handheld and floor vacuum and vice versa.
This model has a dock which charges the Dyson to 100 percent within 3.5 hours. It also provides the ability to connect two attachments and an wand. This is a huge improvement over older Dysons that require a long charge and are difficult to store.
The biggest issue with the V10 is its sluggish run time. As CR's tests show, its marketing claims of up to 60 minutes are not true. This is a common, not exceptional, battery-powered vacuum's run time. This is enough time to vacuum the average-sized home, but not enough to reach every spot. (A second time is usually sufficient). This model has its own advantages however: it's lighter and more mobile than previous Dysons cordless models and its ability to vacuum is significantly better on carpets with low pile.
4. iRobot Roomba 694
The 694 is a basic robotic vacuum that's a great option for those who don't have a lot of money to invest in a robot. It's capable of sucking up all kinds of debris in our testing, and it often passes over the same areas many times to ensure a thorough clean. Its flat front design allows it to reach the corners and edges of walls.
Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt technology to stay clear of obstacles and navigate your home. However, it lacks the mapping capabilities of more advanced models, like our top picks, the i3+EVO and J7+ Series. This means that it can sometimes get stuck on things like phone cords or furniture that isn't in good condition, and frequently runs out of battery power before returning to its original location.
The Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum is superior to the Roomba 694 in all aspects in that it has fewer parts that require regular maintenance and is equipped with an allergen-trapping HEPA filter, incurs lower costs for recurring maintenance, has more advanced automation capabilities and is more efficient in maneuvering itself. It also has a larger dustbin and can charge faster.
The eufy RoboVac X8 has a superior battery life than the Roomba 694. It also comes with physical boundaries strips that can be controlled using the voice assistant on your smartphone. robotic hoovers is also more durable and has a stronger motor, and is able to perform better on both bare floors and carpets with low pile, while providing a wider array of automation features.
5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+
Samsung is a household name in home electronics. It's not surprising that they are also among the top manufacturers of robot vacuums and mop. Their Jet Bot AI+ is equipped with cutting-edge onboard tech for navigation and obstacle avoidance.
The app offers a variety of options to customize your robotic cleaner. These include virtual barriers, mopping levels and behavior adjustments docking frequency settings, and much more. It's easy to understand and easy to use, just as is the case with other Samsung devices.
In our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors, and removed 86 percent of dog hair (on carpet). It was not as successful in avoiding taller items such as socks or cords. This was disappointing. It's also more expensive than other models we've tested and this could be a deterrent for some buyers.

They have an extra-wide cleaning path, and a dustbin that is 2 times larger than other models. This allows them to clean the area for longer. Plus, they include two side sweepers that clean up around edges and in corners. The POWERSERIES Extreme model also includes AutoSense technology, which can tell the presence of dirt on surfaces or embedded dirt and automatically adjusts the power level. It also comes with a smart app that lets you browse the virtual map and control functions and schedules. You can also monitor the status of the vacuum and then send it to its dock for charging with the click of a button. The app lets you alter the LED lights on the top of the vacuum to determine where it is focused or if it's stuck.
The app makes it possible to manually steer the robot in the event of need. My living room rug, for example is darkly colored which could cause a problem for other robots. However, the HRV 425BL kept moving across the border without registering it as a cliff. The ability to program a weekly cleaning schedule is a wonderful time-saving benefit.
